Helghan became highly unstable after the Terracide, which resulted in the installation of high orbit mining facilities to extract petrusite from the planet's interior. Petrusite is currently transported from the surface to the spire through carbon nanotube funnels, where it is processed and shipped to New Helghan or the various colonies. Each spire is crewed by a team of skilled Helghast workers and scientists. Working conditions are extremely hazardous. Average life expectancy of a crew member is 14 months.
The spire and the fuel they produce continue to make Helghan of high strategic importance and have considerable bearing on the future of Vekta's energy security.
