Doctor Evelyn Batton was a ISA weapon researcher who was responsible for developing experimental nuclear weapons to be use against the Helghan Empire during the Second Extrasolar War.
Biography[]
Evelyn Batton was a leading researcher in the weapons division of the ISA. She was chiefly responsible for the development of the self-guided tactical nuclear weapon code-named Red Dust, as well as many other, less destructive weapons. Her work on Vekta was of vital importance in the arms race against the Helghast, and the ISA considers her one of its greatest assets in the region. Some of Evelyn's research was years ahead of that of her colleagues – not just the ones on Vekta, but throughout all the United Colonial Nations' colonies.[1]
Southern Vekta[]
Batton was one of the ISA experts who were secretly summoned to a meeting at Rayhoven Base to decide on voting General Dwight Stratson's plans to authorize the use of nuclear weapons against the Helghast on Vetkan soil. Despite being part of the weapons development team, she was completely against Stratson's plan. However, she and her colleagues were captured by the Helghast under Colonel Cobar and taken to General Armin Metrac's fortress.
Batton was tortured for the ID codes needed to activate Red Dust and the other nuclear weapons stolen by the Helghast. She only gave the Helghast the wrong launch codes before being rescued by Captain Jan Templar and together escaped before the fortress was destroyed by ISA bombers.
Operation Archangel[]
Following the expulsion of the Helghast from Vekta, Batton rose to prominence in the Vektan Council and, to some extent, led the charge for a definitive solution to the problem posed by the Helghast. She was responsible for forming the popular center of the majority group that insisted the Helghast be broken and Helghan be brought back into the Colonial community, rather than being allowed to fester in isolation.[2][3]
Batton joined Battle Group Mandrake and accompanied Templar in Operation Archangel as mission support on the flagship New Sun and to recover the stolen ISA nuclear weapons. Although she and the ISA have no knowledge of Red Dust's location, Batton believed their goal of capturing Scolar Visari would enable to secure the weapons and as well possibly ending the long antagonism between Vekta and Helghan.[4]
Batton helped coordinated with Alpha Squad during the ISA assault on Pyrrhus. After ISA forces were repelled from encroaching the city by Arc Towers, Batton studied a piece of a destroyed tower and discovered that the Helghast were using Petrusite, a dangerous mineral found only on Helghan, to power Pyrrhus' defenses. She also identifies an old mining outpost on the Maelstra Barrens as Petrusite appeared to be heavily concentrated there and mined by the Helghast.[5] She travelled with Alpha Squad to the outpost, where she and Dante Garza and Shawn Natko were captured by Colonel Mael Radec's men and taken to Tharsis Refinery. Batton was interrogated by Radec for the nuclear launch codes in which she refused to divulge as the codes are located on the New Sun. However, she and the captives are rescued by Tomas Sevchenko and Rico Velasquez, but Garza died in the crossfire due to Rico's impulsive action.[6]
Death[]
Batton and Alpha Squad returned to the New Sun, where the vessel comes under attack by Radec's forces. Evelyn coordinated with Templar to attempt to destroy the Petrusite grid. However, they were unable to launch the ship's missiles on the grid as the launchers are disabled by the Helghast and the ship was boarded. Batton remained on the ship's bridge with Templar to pilot the ship to directly crash into the grid, but only to be confronted by Radec and his men, who came for the nuclear codes. While Templar tried to delay Radec from giving up the codes, Evelyn discreetly attempted to erase the codes but only to be fatally shot by Radec, who then retrieved the codes and ultimately used it to detonate a Red Dust warhead over Pyrrhus.[7]

Rico: "I'm a soldier. When push comes to shove, I get shoved."
Metrac: "Your leaders were prepared to sacrifice all of southern Vekta. Miss Batton is telling us how. War brings out the worst in all of us. But together we could end all this suffering."
Evelyn: "Please - I've told you all I know - Aaaagh!"

Evelyn: "I think so."
Templar: "We have to hurry!"

Evelyn: "I think they took him to the airfield."
Templar: "Okay, we have to get there. I can't leave without him! Stay close."
IV.3 - Confrontation[]
Evelyn: "I gave them the wrong launch codes. They can't fire the weapons."
Templar: "Great! Now let's find somewhere for you to hide..."
Helghast: "Huh - ? What was that - ? Who's there?"
~
Evelyn: "Hey! Maybe I could hide inside one of the Helghast planes. He's going to take the last plane! Stop him! They'll know I'm here - don't let them get away!"
Templar: "You should be safe here until I come back. Anything happens, call me on the radio."
Evelyn: "I hope you find your friend, Captain. And - thanks..."
Templar: "You're welcome. Stay out of sight..."
IV.4 - Liberation[]
Templar: "Evelyn - ?"
Evelyn: "Templar - !"
Templar: "We have to get out of here - now."
Evelyn: "What's going on?! Where's Rico?"
Templar: "No time to explain. The ISA is bombing this place to the ground. Okay, buckle up! Could be a bumpy ride..."
Commander Kota: "Captain Templar? This is Commander Kota. I will be your escort home, Sir."
Templar: "Thanks, Commander."
Commander Kota: "Figure you'll be needed, Sir. Word is we're gonna throw everything we have at Helghan itself - hit 'em where it hurts!"
Templar: "Sounds like my kind of party..."
Luger: "Jan, it's Luger. Are you okay?"
Templar: "Yeah, but I lost Rico."
Luger: "I know. We picked up a Helghast radio message."
Templar: "You know where he is?!"
Luger: "Uh-huh. But you aren't gonna like it..."
V.1 - The Hunt[]
Evelyn: "Be careful, Captain. We lost all comms with the base."
Templar: "Okay, I got visual. Keep me posted."
V.2 - The Defection[]
Templar: "What should I know about this place, Evelyn - aside from it stinks?"
Evelyn: "The ISA built an escape route through here years ago. There's even a rail network connected to the emergency shelters. It was never used, but... I have life readings up ahead."
Templar: "Maybe it's sewer rats."
Evelyn: "Don't count on it, Jan..."
V.4 - Resurrection[]
- The end of Stratson
General Stratson: "You fools! I acted for the good of Vekta. The ISA can't win! It's soft and weak -"
(Stratson is cut off)
Templar: "I heard it all before, General. From your friend Adams."
General Stratson: "Adams saw the truth. We planned a Vekta ruled by the military, as part of the Helghast empire. Strong, pure..."
Templar: "Take him away. Prepare him for interrogation."
(Stratson is picked up and escorted away by two ISA soldiers)
General Stratson: "The Rayhoven nukes are already in Helghan! You need me! Vekta needs me!"
(Rico and Evelyn arrive at the scene)
Rico: "Man, all this blood, sweat and shit, and we end up fighting our own. Again."
Templar: "He may have had the uniform. But he wasn't one of us, Rico."
Rico: "Damn right. Brothers in arms, the only brothers I've got."
Evelyn: "What now, Jan? You think the Helghast will attack again?"
Rico: "They'll never give up - but neither will we. We just have to remember what we're fighting for."
Evelyn: "I think Vekta's ready to start over."
Templar: "And if that means taking this war to Helghan - I say let's do it..."
