Maelstra Barrens is the ninth level of Killzone 2.

Plot

After the destruction of the New Sun, Alpha Squad land near the ship's crash site. They reestablished radio contact with Captain Narville, who orders Alpha to secure the crash site and await further others. On their way to the site, they find more survivors from the crash, including an intact LS209 Exoskeleton in which Sev pilots and a buggy. At an ISA outpost, Rico gets into a fight with an ISA private, who disrespected Jan Templar, before Natko breaks it up.

Alpha soon engages against Helghast soldiers who were looting the wreckage before rendezvousing with Narville and his convoy. Together, they gain control of a refinery. Narville informs Alpha their next plan to recontinue their advance on Pyrrhus and rejoin their forces in the city. But soon afterwards the Helghast detonate the Red Dust nuclear warhead on the city in which its explosion and resulting mushroom cloud are seen in the distance by everyone. The nuclear attack kills both ISA and remaining Helghast forces in the city.
